Personality: Miyuki's most notable trait is her need to have others see her as a cool, mature and independent adult. Most likely stemming from her negligent upbringing, Miyuki feels that if she's not completely self-sufficient, then she's failed herself. She believes that she doesn't need anybody to take care of her - despite the fact she does - and lashes out whenever someone argues that she does rely on people and is still just a child. Because of her view, she can come off as slightly bratty and awfully rude, as she constantly shrugs off both affection and gifts from those around her, no matter how much they're trying to help. The most memorable example of this is when Hana gives her 'A Childrens Collection of World Literature', only to have Miyuki outright refuse the gift, furiously demanding what she would need that for - after all, she's an adult, not some kind of kid.
Miyuki actually has a huge heart underneath all her anger and desperation to prove she doesn’t need anyone else - she just doesn’t like to show off that heart, prefering subtle little actions rather than big sweeping gestures of kindness. When she takes a book on parenting from two fellow homeless people, upon pushing through them to get back to Gin and Hana, she drops two riceballs into their bag. Through-out canon, she begins caring, feeding and carrying Kiyoko around, despite not being asked to and initially complaining about what a pain the infant was. She’s even willing to put her life on the line for the baby, and does so on more than one occasion. The first time is during the shoot-out in the Yakuza wedding; when the gunman grabs Miyuki, she immediately pulls Kiyoko away and tries to distance her from the assassin. The second is when, despite the obvious risk she could be pulled down to, Miyuki grabs Sachiko when she jumps off the roof with Kiyoko.
Don't go around praising Miyuki for being kind, though. Her tsundere nature refuses to allow her to accept any kind of praise for being affectionate or sweet. For example, when she begins calling Hana 'Hana-san' instead of 'Uncle Bag' she claims it's because 'Hana-san' is easier to say; not because she's trying to be nice.
It's unfortunate, but Miyuki can be plain rude, at times. Hell, when she's first introduced, she's spitting over the edge of a rooftop and claiming the victims of her spit deserve it. She also mocks anyone and everyone - no matter if they're friend or foe. Even Hana is insulted by Miyuki when she tells her to 'eat shit' and calls her an 'old fart'; only because she was told to speak about her mother in a more respectful tone. She hates anyone who tries to force manners or lady-like behavior on her, preferring it when people simply allow her to act how she wishes. However, even with her terrible manners, Miyuki has her limits on how impolite she can be. When Hana calls Gin out for being a drunkard who abandoned his family in front of his daughter, Miyuki questions whether or not she should have said that given the situation. It seems that Miyuki only acts up when she thinks it won't do too much harm, but holds herself back in more delicate situations.
In Miyuki's eyes, respect needs to be earned, not given. She respects people who are strong - whether it be physically, emotionally or mentally - and, because of that, treats them far better than she would others. While she's fine with insulting or fighting with most people, Miyuki holds herself back when it comes to people she's grown to like, just as she does with Hana, going from calling her a man to respecting her wish to be treated and viewed as a woman. Of course, not being respected by Miyuki doesn't mean you won't be liked; she shows Gin absolutely no respect, but appears to be at least a little fond of him, judging by how terrified she seems whenever his life is in danger and how relieved she is whenever he's safe.
She is also quite a selfless person when it comes down to it. When Sachiko first attempts suicide, Miyuki is the one who tackles her to the ground, frantically telling her not to jump off a bridge. Prior to that, when someone - who is later revealed to be Hana - is trying to crawl in the Hispanic woman’s bedroom, Miyuki places herself in front of her new friend and the babies by checking the window. As mentioned above, she also protects Kiyoko on two separate occasions.
She’s got parental issues leaking from every goddamn pore. Unfortunately, this cornucopia of bottled up anger and guilt often makes her either lash out at others or sink into depressions. She’s had a pretty rough childhood, what with the implications that her parents were negligent towards her. She’s grown up with the idea that there’s no such thing as a happy family and you should simply learn to live with what you have or try and change it by your own hand. Because of that mindset, she has absolutely no pity for anyone born into a less than good home, regardless of that person’s age. When Hana talks about how horrible Kiyoko has it, being an abandoned infant, Miyuki shrugs it off with a scowl, claiming that it’s not only foundlings who feel unloved. On the other side of the spectrum, Miyuki does tend to sink into depressions when the idea of living in a happy family is brought up by others. When Gin suggests that there’s probably an APB out for her, Miyuki claims it’s more likely to be an arrest warrant, before going silent. Later, when talking to the Hispanic woman who fed Kiyoko for her, she appears disheartened upon seeing just how much the woman cares for her own child.
Miyuki’s parental issues have also left her with some intense guilt issues. When her father is mentioned, she tends to withdraw, just as she does when the idea of family is brought up. Despite her father already forgiving her, Miyuki still feels guilty about stabbing him six months ago and doesn’t believe she could ever earn forgiveness. Because of this, she’s utterly terrified of her father and having to face him, at one point in canon going as far as to jump out a train window and run along the tracks just so she doesn’t have to see him. Twice in canon, the thought of her father has brought her to tears; the first being when she decides to call him after finding his message in the newspaper - she’s unable to speak to him, though, and hangs up on him before collapsing in the phone booth sobbing ‘I’m sorry’ repeatedly - and again when showing the Hispanic woman her collection of photos from when she still lived at home.
One of Miyuki's more positive traits is how open-minded she is. She's lived with a couple of colourful individuals over the last six months, and given just how strange her Christmas and New Years' was, it's almost impossible for her to view anyone as 'weird'. She shows no concerns over Hana's gender identity, usually regarding her with more feminine titles (like Bag Lady), and further isn't at all bothered by Hana's 'family' at the bar, only being disturbed by how happy everyone was to be a family, again.
As open-minded as Miyuki is, there’s one thing she’s completely intolerant of; religion. She hates religion and everything involved with it; prayer, the idea of omnipotent beings - she loathes each and every bit of it. It’s implied Miyuki’s intolerance stems from her mother, who appeared to be more interested in spiritual fulfillment than she was in raising her daughter, leaving Miyuki with a deep rooted hatred for faith.
She may come off as incredibly confident, but Miyuki is actually quite insecure. During the train scene, when fellow commuters hold their noses around her, Gin and Hana, she begins to panic. Debatably, it’s not her father that ended up pushing her to jump out the window, but the fellow passengers who begun to openly mock the trio for their smell, judging by the fact the combination of insults and the pressure of knowing her father was only a few feet away almost forced her to tears. Although played for laughs, Miyuki is also insecure about her body - more specifically her chest. Being somewhat flat, she loathes anyone pointing it out, going as far as to strangle Gin when he makes fun of her bust. She’s also quite envious of women with large breasts, such as the Hispanic woman she meets and ends up staring at for several moments before muttering about how cool big breasts are.
Her insecurity doesn’t mean Miyuki will put up with any shit. Whenever Gin gets on her nerves, Miyuki shows no qualms with either insulting him back or simply reaching out and beating the shit out of him. Even with strangers, such as the ones she runs into - and takes the parenting book from - during the beginning of the film Miyuki refuses to tolerate being looked down on or treated poorly. When the two men tell her to watch where she’s going, she snaps back at them, telling them that it’s their fault and they should pay better attention.
Miyuki has a pretty strong sense of sarcasm. She frequently makes little comments to mock just how ridiculous her companions can be and when she’s called a burden by Gin, she tells him that he’s the pot calling the kettle black. Later, when Gin is dressed as a woman in his sleep by the girls working in Hana's old club, Miyuki claims that Gin has 'finally come out', before going back to sleep.
